WHY CLOTH DIAPERS?

Now that cloth diapers have been revolutionized well beyond the days of diaper pins and pails of water, many new moms have a hard time making the decision about how to diaper their baby. Cloth diapering isn’t as popular as disposable diapering … yet. But, the number of mothers using cloth diapers is growing exponentially in today’s climate of green consumerism and a tighter economy. So, why would anyone consider using cloth diapers? Here are the top five reasons to consider:

Reason #1
YOUR BABY IS MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE IN CLOTH DIAPERS
Have you ever pictured yourself sitting comfortably in an armchair relaxing? Now picture yourself wearing paper and plastic underwear. My bet is that comfort wasn’t the first sensation that came to mind. If your baby could speak, I’m sure they’d feel the same way! Cloth diaper materials are soft and comfortable, including fleece, cotton, hemp, or bamboo depending on your choice of style. They are very soft against your baby’s skin and made to keep your baby dry and comfortable.

Reason #2
YOU CANNOT BEAT THE COST SAVINGS OF CLOTH DIAPERS
Regardless of the system of cloth diapers you choose, it is much more economical to choose any cloth system over disposable diapering. Estimates of savings range between $1000 to $2000 for the first baby alone, and that doesn’t include the amount of money many mothers get back when they sell their diapers afterward to others. For babies beyond the first, the cost savings are even greater, and that fully considers the cost of laundering. Many families also choose to use both cloth wipes and reusable diaper bags, totally eliminating the cost of baby wipes and the expensive bags used in the most common diaper pail systems.

Reason #3
YOUR BABY WILL LIKELY USE THE POTTY SOONER IN CLOTH DIAPERS
Disposable diapers trick both you and your baby into believing the diaper is dry when it actually is not. Even though the outer layer might feel dry, bacteria are often still there, coming in contact with your baby’s skin. You always want your baby to notice and notify you that they need to be changed. This minimizes their exposure to bacteria that can cause rashes and other skin irritations. Because toddlers who wear cloth diapers can actually feel when they’re wet or dirty, they are more likely to notice their discomfort and want to use the potty sooner. Those babies then potty train at a younger age, saving the family both precious time and money.

Reason #4
CLOTH DIAPERS ARE MUCH FRIENDLIER TO THE EARTH AND ENVIRONMENT
Do you have any guess as to how long disposable diapers last in the landfill? Estimates range between 100 and 500 years per diaper, so each diaper you put into the landfill is a diaper that future generations will have to deal with in time. Disposable diapers are the third largest source of waste, behind only paper products and food packaging. That’s amazing, considering disposable diapers are one type of product and there are millions of types of paper and food packages. Besides the waste they produce, also consider that the paper, plastic, and chemicals used in those diapers has to go through the manufacturing process, wasting energy again and again, 18 billion times per year.

Reason #5
CLOTH DIAPERS ARE HEALTHIER FOR YOUR BABY
Besides the obvious health implication of minimizing diaper rash (see Reason #3), your baby will not be exposed to the chemicals present in disposable diapers when they use cloth. Disposable diapers contain both dioxin, a byproduct of the paper manufacturing process, and sodium polyacrylate, the chemical that turns urine into a jelly-like substance. Dioxins have been linked with cancer, birth defects, liver damage, and skin diseases. Long-term effects of the exposure of babies’ reproductive organs to these chemicals 24 hours a day for two to three years has not been determined. In addition, cloth diapers are made from breathable materials, permitting air to circulate to the skin while letting out ammonia, the byproduct of urine breakdown.

Many families love the idea of cloth diapers once they see how easy they are to use, but are concerned about maintenance. The laundering and upkeep of your diapers is much easier than you would expect! Diapers are kept in a dry pail, not dunked in water or sprayed. Washing should be done every two to three days and consists of emptying your washable diaper bag of diapers into the washer along with a few teaspoons of detergent. Diapers are then tumble dried on low or dried in the air or sun. No bleach, fabric softener, or expensive detergents are required.
